Shaman and Musk Ox - Carl van den Bosch

Cedar with oil paint staining. Undated, White Rock, B.C.

The idea expressed in this sculpture is one that is found in traditional cultures all over the world, from Finland to the Americas. It is that the shaman, who is responsible for communicating between the forces of supernature and the tribe, puts on the power of a totemic animal.

There is also an interesting themaic connection between this powerful image and the gentle soapstone of Daniel communing with one of his lions.
