Sawas - Carl van den Bosch

Sawas are the traditional terraced fields that make optimal use of the rolling countryside of Java and retain the water runoff to grow water-intensive plants, most commonly rice.

Oil paint on canvas. Size unknown. 1960s, London, Ontario. The painting was either given or sold to family friends in Portland, Oregon: a photograph in the family albums shows it hanging in their home in the late 1970s. This image is derived from the print of a colour photograph.
