The background coloring is exquisitely subtle, achieved entirely through Carl's own version of pointilism, also seen in the pen-and-ink drawing Salamanders and several serigraphs of this period.

There is an additional identification line outside the frame of the image in which the date is given as "1974", although this is almost certainly a mistake.
