Fugato - Carl van den Bosch

Serigraph. 5 colours. w28cm h35.5cm. Signed, 1973, Vancouver, B.C.

This may have been an experiment with oil paints instead of printer's inks. The texture of the actual print is very dense, consistent with oil paints, whereas commercial silkscreen printer's inks dry flat. He would still have used the silkscreen printing medium, which is a gelatinous substance; all these materials require cleanup with petroleum solvent, so that they do not dissolve the water-based glue on the screen.

It is easy to believe at first glance that this is a woodblock print. The background texture certainly looks like it may be an image of a block of very grainy wood; but it is entirely possible that Carl created this texture purely by the way he applied the glue to the screen, sometimes by running dry brushes and palette knives through it. The woodblock "look" is also created with the meticulously created dark highlights on the birds' bright breast feathers.
