In the mid-1960s Carl followed a correspondence course in commercial art and illustration. The images reproduced here
are a selection of the exercises he completed: they are the ones he kept for his own portfolio, so they are representative
of what he considered to be his best work in that genre.
Cortis Tablets is quite comical - and an early instance of Carl's fondness for native art styles.
In The Ghost of Moby Dick book cover design, note the author name Christian Lerac: Carl's given names were officially
Carel Christiaan; "Lerac", which reverses the first name, was briefly used in the 1970s to sign paintings.
